Welcome

Hello everyone,

This is the very first post of Its Within Reach. In this blog, I’d like to share some of the information and techniques I’ve learned since I began teaching special education four years ago.  Along with that, I’ll include articles, books, and videos that I have found to be helpful. I work primarily with children diagnosed with PDD/Autism. Many of this information will benefit parents as well as teachers.
When I first started out, I was lucky enough to have great veteran teachers who really supported me. However, many of my teacher friends were not nearly as lucky. They had to find their own way all on their own which is unfortunate because, while teaching is comprised of many things, reinventing the wheel should not be one of them. In speaking to parents of my students over the years, I have found a similar story among them as well. Many parents feel as if they need to go it alone. that does not have to be the case any longer now with the internet.

I hope you find the information on here useful and feel free to comment or add your own tip.

A little goes a long way

Having trouble during transition time to another area of the room or another activity? Use lotion as a reinforcer for “nice sitting and waiting.”  Just a little drop of lotion on their hands goes a long way. This is a great motivator for children with sensory issues because it provides sensory input as well as gives them something to do while the class gets settled.
